The contents below are information extracted from my one-week observation at SMPN 1 Kendari. There I was able to compare the Philippine and Indonesian curricula, improve pre-conceptual knowledge, and consider teaching and classroom management strategies from my Cooperating Teacher.

Personal Take on Mrs. Ibu Suruwaty's Teaching Approach in Social Studies

One of the strengths of Mrs. Ibu Suruwaty is her ability to think of educational strategies that will ensure that students are able to imagine the examples using visual aids. The resources do not solely come from her inventory but also to what is inside the bags of her students— which is a manifestation of teacher-student engagement. Thus, she makes it possible that all students are involved in the learning process, not limiting the learning to what the teacher has to offer. In Social Studies, I have observed that many students, both in Indonesia and the Philippines, are unwilling to learn because they lack motivation to learn the subject matter. One of the primary reasons for that is there is a lack of creativity on the teachers’ part, leading to a dull delivery of instruction. In the Philippines, I have heard multiple times from my students that whenever it is time for Social Studies, they will say “Oh, Social Studies again?” and they will start frowning. Thus, it is a challenge for us Social Studies teachers to adapt to modern educational strategies that will get the students to love the subject matter. On the other hand, I believe it would be better if Mrs. Ibu Surawaty involved herself in implementing the Universal Design for Learning— three principles include Multiple Means of Representation. Multiple Means of Action and Expression. Multiple Means of Engagement. The formative assessments being employed inside the classroom after the class meeting is the traditional pen-and-paper assessment. I observed that many students are unable to express themselves or showcase their subject matter mastery and competence because it is limited to writing essays that are objective-based. It would be better if some assessments were different depending on what students best answer the question— through singing, making poems, dancing, crafting dioramas, etc.
